After his flight from China, the Dalai Lama got a new home in the district in 1959. Since then, the area has grown into a Tibetan settlement, better known as “Little Tibet”. To this day it still is the home of the Dalai Lama.
The name Dharamsala literally means “resting place” in Hindi and is a place in the state of Himachal Pradesh in northern India.
A visit to the Namgyal monastery is certainly worthwhile. This is the Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Dalai Lamas.
Also visit the Norbulingka Institute, an institute that focuses on preserving the cultural legacy of the Tibetan people. This also contains one of the most important libraries and institutions for Tibetan literary and Buddhist works.
