Fatehpur Sikri
Fatehpur Sikri is also known as the City of Victory. It is a city and municipality in the Agra district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
It was the capital of the Mogul Empire from 1571 to 1585. The emperor Akbar the Great built the city in rocky area 37 km west of the city of Agra. Because it was a ceremonial capital, he never strengthened the city. Fatehpur Sikri is unique in its design and architecture.
The city has a special atmosphere because, although it is crowded by both Indian and foreign tourists, it is actually a deserted city. Emperor Akhbar, one of the greatest Mogul rulers, built the city in the 2nd half of the 16th century in honor of the Muslim saint Salim Chishti. This saint predicted to the emperor, who at that time had no heir to the throne, that he would have three more sons. The prediction came true and Emperor Akbar built Fatehpur Sikri as a tribute.
It took 15 years to build the entire complex. But after a few years people already abandoned it due to a shortage of drinking water.
Today there is a phenomenal collection of large temples and palaces left, surrounded by ruins with old houses behind it. In addition to the beautiful buildings, the atmosphere in this ghost town is also worth a visit.
