Leh
Leh is the ancient capital of the ancient Ladakh kingdom. Nowadays it is listed as Leh district in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The city is in a valley at an altitude of 3500 meters. It is just above the Indus Valley in the southwest of the Tibetan Highland.
People call it ‘little Tibet’ because the area looks more like Tibet than India.
Desert and rocky, snowy high mountains define the surrounding landscape.
The overland route along the famous Leh-Manali Highway is one of the most spectacular mountain routes in the Himalayas.
A breathtaking road winds from Manali in the green Kullu Valley over mountain passes of more than 5000m to Leh.
It is a difficult ride with fairly long driving times. Nevertheless, the cross-country trip is ideal for acclimatization.
After all, you start fairly low in Manali, cross several high passes and arrive in Leh at 3500m after a week.
