Overview

The most famous building in India is situated in Agra: the Taj Mahal.
The Taj Mahal, built for the love of his wife Mumtaz, was commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan.
She died after 17 years of marriage while giving birth to their 14th child.
The construction of this fairytale love monument started in 1631 and was completed in 1653. In total, more than 20,000 people worked on the building, which was built entirely of marble and decorated with semi-precious stones, which are inlaid into the marble in impressive and elegant patterns.
It is so unique in its beauty that the construction work is considered an absolute miracle.
The story goes that there were plans to build a second Taj Mahal. As a contrast with this white fairy tale, Shah Jahan wanted to have a black marble Taj Mahal built to place his own tomb there. However, he was deposed by his son before this could be realized.

Another big attraction is the Agra Fort which was built in 1565 under Emperor Akbar. It was intended as a military structure, but in the time of the grandson of Shah Jahan the emphasis was on an imperial palace.
The fort has 20 meters high, massive walls, surrounded by a wide canal of approximately 2.5 kilometers.
